What's this all about?

Freebie Friday is open to all JAFF authors. It's completely free to participate, we just ask you to follow a few rules to keep things fair and well-organised. Please read the below rules and policies carefully.

It's currently FREE to have your book featured.
An admin charge (probably US$5 or $10) may be levied at a later date to support admin costs, but for the first 6-12 months at least, I envision this being free.

The Rules

  • Retailer books only. No newsletter signup books or reader magnets. The book must be genuinely free on Amazon (or other retailers, at a very minimum your web store or Bookfunnel) with no email gate.

  • Use your KDP free days. Set your book free from at least Thursday to Saturday to cover the Friday in all time zones. We recommend Thursday through Sunday for maximum exposure.

  • To give everyone a fair go, you can only feature once every 90 days. This applies to you personally, even if you write under more than one pen name. One person, one slot every 3 months. PAs and publishers may submit on an author's behalf, but the same rule applies to the author as an individual. This cooldown period may be increased if Freebie Friday becomes popular enough, in order to give more authors a chance to be featured. We may also increase the number of books to be featured on Freebie Fridays eventually, but for the moment it is envisioned to be one book every Friday.

  • Help us promote Freebie Fridays! This is of benefit to ALL JAFF authors; it will help grow readership. Please post on your social media and share to your own newsletter, if you have one. Drive the traffic to the Freebie Fridays page here. We'll be creating our own mailing list to help grow and will always share in Austen Readers!

Our priority is READER EXPERIENCE. The following rules are created with that in mind.

  • New authors and books (to Freebie Friday, not new overall) get priority. Authors and books that have never featured before will be given priority over those that have.

  • Full-length books are prioritised. Novellas and novels are welcome, but short stories and anything under 100 pages is unlikely to be selected unless there are no other bookings for that date.

  • Same book only once per year. A book cannot be featured again within a rolling 12-month period. Bring a different book next time!

YOU MUST PROVE IT

  • We accept bookings within 90 days only. Because KDP Select runs on a 90-day enrollment cycle, we can only accept bookings for Fridays within the next 90 days. You MUST have your free days already set when you apply.

  • Proof is required. You must upload a screenshot from your KDP dashboard showing your free promotion is scheduled. No proof, no booking — no exceptions. See below for what your screenshot should look like. Yes, we know this doesn't show the book title. Yes, it doesn't prove anything really. But... 

  • Do NOT cancel your free days after submitting your booking.

  • We do NOT want to disappoint readers by failing them on our promise that the book is free. However, this is a free service and we do not have time to be checking on authors. If we receive complaints that your book was not free on its featured Friday, you may not be permitted to submit further books to Freebie Friday.

  • If your booking is NOT accepted, we will let you know IMMEDIATELY so that you can cancel or edit your free days before they go to waste.

  • If your KDP enrollment hasn't renewed yet and you can't set the dates, simply wait until you can and then submit. I advise you to make a note of your rollover date and get in quick to book your Freebie Friday feature, because I do envision this becoming quite popular.

Curation Policy

  • Freebie Friday is a curated feature. We want every book we promote to be one that Austenesque readers will love and that reflects well on the JAFF community. To that end, we do look at a book's reviews and ratings when considering a booking. Books with a rating average below 4.0 stars will be looked at more closely and may be deprioritised.

  • On the topic of AI: we cannot and will not attempt to police whether books were written with AI assistance, AI detectors are unreliable and we cannot prove anything either way. However, if a book's reviews contain multiple complaints about AI-generated content, or if the cover is very obviously AI-generated, we may choose not to feature it. This isn't about judging anyone's creative process, it's about making sure the books we recommend are ones readers will genuinely enjoy and appreciate.

  • The final decision on whether a book will be featured on a Freebie Friday on this site belongs to Catherine Bilson. Disputes will not be entered into.

If you cannot agree to abide by these rules and policies, do not submit your book for consideration.
